“Egonga” Reportedly Released After Prison Term in Equatorial Guinea Amid Lingering Controversy
Controversial Equatorial Guinean public figure and former anti-corruption official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, popularly known on social media as “Egonga,” is reportedly out of prison after serving a jail term linked to corruption and financial misconduct allegations in Equatorial Guinea.
Reports circulating across social media platforms on Tuesday claimed that Engonga had regained his freedom after spending nearly two years in detention and prison custody following one of Africa’s most talked-about scandals in recent years.
The development has quickly reignited conversations online, with supporters celebrating his release while critics continue to question the controversies that surrounded his dramatic fall from power.
Engonga, a former senior official who headed Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), became internationally known in 2024 after hundreds of alleged explicit videos linked to him leaked online during an ongoing corruption investigation. The scandal triggered outrage across Equatorial Guinea and beyond, drawing intense scrutiny from both the government and international media.
Authorities in Equatorial Guinea later accused him of embezzlement, abuse of office and illicit enrichment connected to public funds. Court proceedings that followed placed him at the center of a high-profile anti-corruption trial involving several former state officials.
While several social media posts now claim he has completed a two-year sentence and has been released, there has not yet been a detailed official government statement publicly confirming the exact terms and conditions of his release as of Tuesday evening.
Earlier reports in 2025 indicated that prosecutors had initially pushed for a much longer prison sentence over allegations that large sums of state funds were diverted for personal use. Some media outlets later reported that he was eventually sentenced in connection with the financial crimes case.
Engonga’s case attracted global attention not only because of the corruption allegations but also due to the political sensitivity surrounding his position within Equatorial Guinea’s ruling elite. He is related to the family of long-serving President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, whose administration has governed the Central African nation for decades.
The controversy also sparked wider debates about governance, morality, abuse of office and accountability among senior public officials in Equatorial Guinea. Analysts say the scandal severely damaged Engonga’s once-rising political influence despite his previous prominence within the country’s financial and political establishment.
As news of his reported release spreads online, many observers are now waiting to see whether Engonga will make a public appearance or issue a statement regarding his future after prison.
