Bawumia: NDC’s Violence Undermines Democracy

Accra, Ghana – July 11, 2025 – Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred the parliamentary rerun election in the Ablekuma North Constituency, calling it a betrayal of the democratic ideals Ghana has long upheld.

Speaking during an interview on Friday, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over reports of voter intimidation, violent clashes, and arrests of individuals wearing unauthorized uniforms, which emerged as voting took place in 19 polling stations.

“The violence we are seeing is profoundly disheartening,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “It threatens the core of our democracy and brings into question the NDC’s dedication to peace and fair procedures.”

The rerun was necessitated by the Electoral Commission following the December 7, 2024, general elections, which were plagued by disputed results in parts of the Ablekuma North Constituency. While the commission hoped to restore credibility to the electoral process, the rerun was instead characterized by tension and unrest.

Mounting Tensions

Eyewitnesses and local observers reported several incidents of unrest, with security forces intervening in certain areas. The situation has sparked widespread concern among civil society groups, who have called for a comprehensive investigation and stronger safeguards ahead of future elections.

Dr. Bawumia urged the relevant institutions to act swiftly and impartially.

“We urge the appropriate authorities to conduct a quick and unbiased investigation,” he said. “Let justice prevail, but let peace be preserved.”

A Test for the NDC

Bawumia’s comments also placed scrutiny on the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the governing party, which took office after a closely contested 2024 election. He questioned whether the party remained fully committed to democratic norms.

The rerun election and its aftermath have added to rising political tensions in the country, with both major parties trading accusations and calls growing for electoral reforms.

A Call for Calm

Despite the tensions, Dr. Bawumia appealed for calm among citizens and party supporters.

“We must all play our part in ensuring that Ghana’s democratic gains are not eroded,” he said.

The Electoral Commission has yet to release the official results of the rerun, and security remains heightened in the area.
