Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Wins NPP Flagbearership as Delegates Cast Votes Nationwide
Accra, Ghana — January 31, 2026 — Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially declared the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
In a keenly contested internal election, Dr. Bawumia secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 % of valid ballots cast, to claim victory and the mandate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election. The results were confirmed late Saturday evening after votes from more than 211,000 delegates across over 300 polling centres nationwide were collated.
Final Results and Contestants
The election featured five aspirants seeking the party’s highest ticket:
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia — 56.48 % (Winner)
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong — 23.76 %
Dr. Bryan Acheampong — 18.53 %
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum — 1.02 %
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong — 0.21 %
Bawumia’s decisive majority surpassed the constitutional threshold required to avoid a runoff, underscoring his firm support among party delegates nationwide.
Reactions and Calls for Unity
In his first remarks after the announcement, Dr. Bawumia thanked party members and delegates for their confidence and pledged to work for unity within the NPP as it prepares for the national elections. “Together we stand, divided we fall,” he said, urging supporters of all aspirants to rally behind the collective goal of reclaiming governance in 2028.
He also highlighted the importance of discipline and cooperation following intense competition, signaling a focus on internal cohesion ahead of the next phase of campaigning.
Political Implications
The primaries, held more than two years before the general election, reflect the NPP’s early strategic planning amid efforts to regroup after its loss in the 2024 national polls. Delegates described the voting process as largely peaceful and credible, with minor incidents that did not affect overall confidence in the outcome.
Leaders from within and outside the party have since responded positively, including parliamentary caucuses and party executives who have congratulated Dr. Bawumia and pledged support for the campaign ahead.
