Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Destools Okyeame Kofi Nti.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled his royal linguist, Okyeame Kofi Nti, in a significant development within the chieftaincy institution of the Ashanti Kingdom.
The decision was taken at the Manhyia Palace after the matter was brought before the Asanteman Traditional Council. Following deliberations, the linguist was found culpable of charges leveled against him, leading to his immediate removal from office.
Sources indicate that the process involved the invocation of the Great Oath (Ntamkɛse), a sacred and binding traditional mechanism used to establish truth and accountability in matters of customary law. Okyeame Kofi Nti is reported to have failed to adequately respond to the oath, a situation which, under Ashanti tradition, constitutes grounds for destoolment.
In accordance with customary practices, his official regalia were removed, symbolizing the loss of his authority, status, and privileges within the royal court.
The position of Okyeame is one of great significance in Akan tradition. The linguist serves as the chief spokesperson and intermediary between the Asantehene and his subjects, and the role demands the highest standards of loyalty, discipline, and adherence to tradition.
This latest action highlights the Asantehene’s firm commitment to upholding discipline, accountability, and the sanctity of the Golden Stool. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has, over the years, maintained a strong stance on enforcing customary laws, including the destoolment of chiefs and palace officials who fall short of expected standards.
The development has sparked widespread discussion across the Ashanti Region, with many observers emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity within the traditional leadership system.
An official statement from the Manhyia Palace is, however, yet to be released to provide further details on the matter.
