MoMo Vendors Protest Against MTN Ghana Over Blocked Accounts
Hundreds of mobile money (MoMo) vendors across Ghana staged protests on Wednesday, April 15, following the alleged blocking of their merchant SIM cards and mobile wallets by MTN Ghana.
The affected vendors say the sudden restrictions have left them unable to access funds held in their accounts, severely disrupting their daily operations and leaving many stranded without working capital.
According to the vendors, the action was taken without prior notice, sparking frustration and confusion within the mobile money agent community. Some claim significant sums of money have been locked in the affected accounts, raising concerns over financial losses and business continuity.
In several locations, groups of vendors reportedly gathered at MTN service centres to demand immediate intervention and clarity on the situation. The protests caused temporary disruptions in mobile money services, as agents struggled to serve customers.
The vendors are calling on MTN Ghana to urgently restore access to their accounts and provide clear explanations for the restrictions. They also want improved communication and support systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The incident comes at a time when mobile money services continue to play a crucial role in Ghana’s financial ecosystem, serving millions of users daily and supporting small businesses nationwide.
While the exact cause of the account restrictions remains unclear, industry observers suggest the move could be linked to internal compliance checks, fraud prevention efforts, or ongoing operational changes within the company’s mobile money structure.
As of now, MTN Ghana has yet to release a comprehensive public statement addressing the concerns raised by the vendors. Stakeholders are, however, expecting engagement between the company and affected agents to resolve the matter swiftly.
The situation remains under close watch as developments unfold.
