The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has reportedly been arrested and detained in the Netherlands in a developing international investigation linked to alleged financial crimes.
According to an official statement from the Parliament of Ghana, the MP was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after arriving in the Netherlands. Parliamentary authorities confirmed that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are currently working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain full details surrounding the arrest.
Reports emerging from international and Ghanaian media indicate that the detention may be connected to an alleged investigation involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Sources familiar with the matter claim the probe is linked to suspected financial crimes, including alleged money laundering and romance scam activities said to involve up to $32 million. However, neither Dutch authorities nor the FBI have officially confirmed the exact charges against the Ghanaian legislator at this stage.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, in a statement issued to the public, noted that Parliament had been formally informed of the development and was seeking clarification on the circumstances leading to the detention. The statement further stressed that updates would be communicated once more verified information becomes available.
Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor later disclosed that the MP is currently in stable condition while in custody. He explained that preliminary information available to Parliament suggests the arrest may have been executed based on a warrant reportedly issued by authorities in the United States, although the full details of the warrant remain unclear.
Kwame Ohene Frimpong, an independent MP who caucuses with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament, won the 2024 parliamentary election after defeating former MP Andy Appiah-Kubi in the constituency. Before entering politics, he was widely known as a businessman and media entrepreneur associated with Salt Media Group.
The incident has generated significant public attention both in Ghana and abroad, with many calling for transparency and due process as investigations continue. Legal analysts say the case could develop into an extradition matter if formal charges are eventually filed by foreign authorities.
As of now, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Dutch authorities, and the FBI have not released detailed official statements explaining the exact nature of the allegations or the next legal steps expected in the case.
