Historic Transition at Manhyia: Nana Ama Bonsu Officially Outdoored as the 15th Asantehemaa
The Asante Kingdom has entered a new chapter in its rich royal history following the official outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu as the 15th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother of Asanteman). The historic ceremony was held on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, where she was formally presented in accordance with centuries-old Asante customs and traditions.
Her installation follows the passing of the revered 14th Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, in August 2025, bringing to an end a period of transition within one of Ghana’s most respected traditional institutions.
Dressed in traditional black mourning cloth, Nana Ama Bonsu was accompanied in a solemn procession to the Asantehemaa’s Palace amid traditional drumming, singing, and cultural rites. In keeping with Asante custom, white powder was sprinkled during the procession, symbolising purification, blessings, acceptance, and the continuation of the royal lineage.
The Significance of the Asantehemaa
The office of the Asantehemaa is one of the highest and most influential positions within the Asante Kingdom. While often translated as “Queen Mother,” the role extends far beyond ceremonial duties.
The Asantehemaa serves as:
The custodian of the royal matrilineal lineage.
A principal adviser to the Asantehene on matters of governance, tradition, and social welfare.
A guardian of Asante customs, values, and cultural heritage.
An advocate for the welfare of women, children, and families across Asanteman.
A key figure in the nomination of a successor to the Golden Stool whenever the office of the Asantehene becomes vacant, subject to the approval of the kingdom’s kingmakers.
A Legacy of Distinguished Queen Mothers
Nana Ama Bonsu succeeds Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who was enstooled in 2017 after the passing of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, one of the longest-serving and most respected Asantehemaa in modern history.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the elder sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, served Asanteman with distinction for eight years until her passing in 2025. Her reign was marked by her dedication to preserving tradition, promoting peace, and supporting community development.
A New Chapter for Asanteman
The outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu represents the continuation of a royal institution that has shaped the governance and cultural identity of the Asante Kingdom for centuries. Traditional leaders, royals, and citizens gathered at Manhyia Palace to witness the historic occasion, reaffirming their commitment to preserving the customs and values of Asanteman.
While the Manhyia Palace has officially confirmed her installation, detailed biographical information about Nana Ama Bonsu has not yet been publicly released. As such, respect for royal protocol requires that public commentary remain focused on her official role until further information is announced by the Palace.
As she assumes this revered office, many across Ghana and beyond will look to Nana Ama Bonsu to uphold the enduring traditions of the Asante Kingdom while providing wise counsel and leadership alongside Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th Asantehene.
Her installation marks not only the appointment of a new Queen Mother but also the continuation of one of Africa’s oldest and most respected traditional monarchies.
