Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Child Street Begging, Urge Public Compliance with Protection Laws

Authorities in Ghana have stepped up efforts to curb the growing issue of child street begging, reinforcing the need for strict adherence to national child protection regulations.

Officials from the Department of Social Welfare, working alongside law enforcement agencies, have launched renewed operations aimed at removing children from the streets and placing them under appropriate care and protection. The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to safeguard the welfare and rights of vulnerable children.

According to authorities, the public plays a critical role in addressing the problem. Citizens are being strongly advised to refrain from giving money or material support to children engaged in street begging, as such actions inadvertently encourage the practice and expose minors to further harm.

Under the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), child neglect, exploitation, and hazardous forms of labour—including street begging—are prohibited. The law mandates that every child must be protected from conditions that undermine their health, education, and overall development.

Social welfare officials emphasize that many of the affected children are victims of exploitation or are driven to the streets by difficult socio-economic circumstances. As a result, intervention efforts are not only focused on enforcement but also on rehabilitation, family tracing, and reintegration into safer environments.

The public is encouraged to report cases of child street begging to the nearest social welfare office or police station to enable timely intervention. Authorities stress that a coordinated national response—supported by responsible public behavior—is essential to effectively eliminate the practice and ensure a safer future for children across the country.
