Bloody Clash at Akyem Nkwanum Leaves Man’s Hand Severed as Police Restore Calm
A violent confrontation linked to illegal mining activities at Akyem Nkwanum has left one man in critical condition after his hand was severed during a bloody cutlass fight.
The incident, which occurred at the New Market area near Akyem Oda, reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding between a security officer and workers at a galamsey site.
Speaking on the matter, Emmanuel Appiah Kubi, Assemblyman for the Akyem Aboabo Electoral Area in the Birim Central Municipality, disclosed that tensions erupted after a dispute at the mining site escalated into violence.
According to him, the security officer allegedly opened fire during the altercation and shot one of the workers, further inflaming the situation.
The conflict later intensified when the parties returned to town. Witnesses say some colleagues of the injured worker allegedly identified the security officer and attacked him in retaliation, leading to a chaotic cutlass confrontation in the community.
During the violent exchange, one individual suffered life-threatening injuries, including the severing of a hand. The victim is currently receiving emergency medical treatment and remains in critical condition.
The shocking incident has sparked public concern over rising violence associated with illegal mining operations in parts of the Eastern Region.
Security analyst Paul Boateng has called on law enforcement authorities to act swiftly against those involved in the attack. He stressed that individuals openly wielding dangerous weapons in public should face strict legal consequences.
According to him, persons seen in viral videos brandishing cutlasses must be treated with the same seriousness as individuals unlawfully displaying firearms.
Meanwhile, the Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed that calm has been restored in the area following the clash.
In a statement, police said officers responded immediately after receiving reports and videos showing groups of young men attacking one another with cutlasses at the New Station area of Akyem Oda.
Police investigations led officers to two injured suspects receiving treatment at separate health facilities.
One of the suspects, identified as George Okyere, aged 30, was found at the emergency ward of Oda Jubilee Hospital with a deep cut on his forehead and one of his fingers chopped off.
Another suspect, Paul Pascalele, was also receiving treatment at the Akyem Oda Government Hospital for severe cutlass wounds to his right hand.
