Wontumi Pleads Not Guilty in EXIM Bank Loan Fraud Case

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi,” has pleaded not guilty to multiple criminal charges in an alleged EXIM Bank loan fraud case.

Chairman Wontumi appeared before court on Monday, May 18, 2026, where he denied charges including defrauding by false pretence, authoring a forged document, money laundering, and causing financial loss to a public body.

The case, which has attracted significant public and political attention, is linked to allegations surrounding financial transactions and loan arrangements involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

According to prosecutors, investigations were launched after concerns emerged over the acquisition and use of funds allegedly secured under questionable circumstances. Authorities claim some documents connected to the transaction may have been forged, while portions of the funds are also suspected to have been laundered through various channels.

However, Wontumi’s legal team strongly rejected the allegations in court, insisting that their client has committed no wrongdoing. The defence argued that the charges are unfounded and expressed confidence that the court proceedings will eventually clear him of all accusations.

The court subsequently admitted Chairman Wontumi to bail under conditions yet to be fully disclosed publicly, while the case has been adjourned to a later date for further hearing.

Background to the Case

The controversy surrounding the EXIM Bank matter began after state investigators reportedly started examining financial dealings connected to some companies allegedly linked to Chairman Wontumi. The investigations focused on whether loan agreements and supporting documentation used in securing funds from the state-owned financial institution were legitimate.

Over the past months, the matter has generated intense political debate, with supporters of the NPP chairman describing the prosecution as politically motivated, while critics insist the legal process must be allowed to take its course.

Chairman Wontumi remains one of the most influential political figures within the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, making the case one of the most closely watched political and legal developments in the country.
