Bawumia Unites Former Rivals, Appoints Them Co-Chairmen of Key NPP Policy Committees
The Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken a major step towards strengthening party unity by appointing all four of his former presidential primary competitors as co-chairmen of newly created policy committees within the party.
The move, announced on Thursday, is being widely interpreted by political observers as a strategic effort to close ranks within the NPP and reposition the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to reports, the newly established policy committee framework is aimed at developing credible, research-driven and evidence-based policy alternatives across key sectors of Ghana’s economy and governance. The initiative is also expected to help the NPP strengthen its role as an organised and policy-focused opposition party.
Under the new arrangement, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has been named Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, a role many believe aligns with his longstanding advocacy for entrepreneurship and private-sector job creation.
Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong will serve as Co-Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, while former Agriculture and Interior Minister Bryan Acheampong has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee.
Former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum has also been named Co-Chairman of the Education Policy Committee, bringing his extensive educational policy experience to the new structure.
At the centre of the framework is the main NPP Policy Committee, which will be chaired by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, with technocrat Dr. Kwasi Nyame Baafi serving as Secretary.
The committees are expected to oversee policy development in several critical sectors, including employment, health, education, transport, energy, decentralisation, local governance, security and the economy. Their responsibilities will include engaging stakeholders, conducting independent research and producing alternative policy proposals for the party’s leadership.
Political analysts say the decision by Dr. Bawumia demonstrates a deliberate attempt to transform internal competition into collaboration by bringing influential figures within the party under one coordinated policy platform.
The appointments have already sparked discussions within political circles, with many party supporters describing the move as a significant sign of reconciliation, maturity and unity within the NPP following its internal presidential contest.
