WAEC Confirms Arrests Over BECE Examination Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council has confirmed the arrest of several individuals in connection with examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana.

According to officials, approximately seven persons have so far been apprehended as part of efforts to clamp down on irregularities that threaten the credibility of the national examination. Those arrested are reported to include teachers, invigilators, and other collaborators, rather than a large number of candidates.

WAEC indicated that the suspects were involved in coordinated schemes aimed at compromising the integrity of the examination process. These include the smuggling of mobile phones into examination halls, capturing and sharing live questions on messaging platforms, and distributing prepared answers to candidates.

The Council further noted that some of the activities involved the use of digital tools to generate and circulate answers in real time, raising fresh concerns about the evolving nature of examination fraud in the digital age.

While initial reports suggested fewer arrests, updated information confirms that the number has risen as investigations continue. WAEC has assured the public that it is working closely with security agencies to identify and prosecute all persons involved.

The examination body reiterated its commitment to maintaining the credibility and fairness of the BECE, warning that anyone found culpable—whether student or official—will face the full rigours of the law.

Authorities are also urging candidates to adhere strictly to examination regulations and avoid any form of malpractice, emphasizing that sanctions could include the cancellation of results or prosecution.
