Man Arrested for Attempted Theft of Police Armoured Vehicle in Ashanti Region
A 26-year-old man, identified as Ebenezer Frimpong, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region in a bold daytime incident that drew significant public attention.
The incident occurred on April 15, 2026, when the suspect reportedly took advantage of a brief lapse in security after the driver of the armoured vehicle stepped away, leaving it unattended. Seizing the opportunity, the suspect is said to have entered the vehicle and driven off, an action that quickly raised alarm among nearby residents and security personnel.
Authorities were immediately alerted, prompting a swift and coordinated response. Security operatives initiated a pursuit along the Nkawie–Abuakwa stretch in an effort to intercept the vehicle and prevent any potential security threat.
The chase ended at Mim, near Abuakwa, where the suspect was successfully apprehended. The armoured vehicle was recovered intact, with no damage reported, and no injuries were recorded during the operation.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the act was carried out alone or involved other individuals.
The incident has raised concerns about security protocols surrounding sensitive equipment, even as the rapid response by security personnel helped avert what could have escalated into a more serious situation.
