Neymar Furious After Refereeing Error Forces Him Off in Santos Defeat

Brazilian football star Neymar was left visibly furious after he was mistakenly substituted during Santos’ 3-0 defeat to Coritiba in the Brazilian Serie A on Sunday, in what many football observers have described as one of the most bizarre officiating errors of the season.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute when Neymar had briefly stepped off the pitch to receive treatment for a calf problem. During that moment, the fourth official mistakenly displayed Neymar’s number 10 on the substitution board instead of defender Gonzalo Escobar, who was reportedly the player Santos intended to replace.

By the time the error was noticed, substitute Robinho Jr. had already entered the game and play had resumed, meaning the decision could no longer be reversed under football regulations.

An angry Neymar attempted to return to the pitch and protested strongly to the match officials. He was subsequently shown a yellow card for re-entering the field without permission. In frustration, the Brazilian forward grabbed the substitution note from officials and showed it to television cameras to prove that Escobar — not him — was meant to be substituted.

Following the match, Santos released an official statement confirming that the substitution had been wrongly executed by the fourth official.

“The fourth official got the substitution wrong. This was confirmed by the television coverage and by the note used by the officials during the substitution. An inexplicable error that was not corrected,” the club stated.

The controversy overshadowed Santos’ heavy defeat and came at a critical moment for Neymar, who is attempting to secure a place in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup under new coach Carlo Ancelotti. The match was considered Neymar’s final opportunity to impress before the squad announcement.

Neymar’s Difficult Road Back

The 34-year-old has endured a difficult period in recent years following a serious knee injury suffered in October 2023 while playing for Brazil. The injury kept him sidelined for a long time and raised questions about whether he could return to top-level football.

Despite the setbacks, Neymar has continued working toward regaining full fitness since rejoining Santos FC, the club where his professional career began before he rose to global fame with FC Barcelona and later Paris Saint-Germain.

Historically, Neymar remains one of Brazil’s greatest footballers. He is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, surpassing the legendary Pele. He has represented Brazil in multiple FIFA World Cups and played a key role in the country’s Olympic gold medal triumph at the 2016 Rio Games.

Although Neymar’s career has often been interrupted by injuries and controversies, he continues to be one of the most influential and recognizable figures in world football.

The strange substitution incident has since sparked widespread debate among football fans and analysts, with many criticizing the officiating team for failing to correct what appeared to be an obvious administrative mistake.
